crowley, bureau chief. we talked about the executive orders there and there is real stuff there. the meat of all this is the legislation that obama is proposing and asking congress to act. you have republicans and a number of pro gun democrats including the senate majority leader harry reid who does not seem enthusiastic at the start of the debate right now. realistically, what do you think the most is that we can get out of this in terms of gun control laws? >> not that much. the orders are incremental and they will make some difference. they are not going to solve the problem as it is diagnosed. i don't see action in the congress. i wouldn't be surprised about a fig leaf measure and congress wants to show they did something that is toothless. i think that might be a realistic option. i don't think you will see very much in the way of the package the president proposed unless public opinion does seem to be moving a little bit. after the other big shootings, you don't see sentiment in favor of gun control. if the president wants to keep driving this and followed through more than i and ot

priorities in order, a one of the real problems with president obama is his priorities seem to be a mess. instead of talking about spending control, we're talking about gun control. instead of talking about solid, long-term economic solutions to help turn around the economy, we're talking about minting a trillion dollar coin. this is a president who seems to be sort of thumbing his nose at what really needs to be done in this next term. i mean, instead he's doing a power grab to secure his legacy. neil: you know, ilya, he's not the first president to try to go beyond an election and take what was a victory if terms of a -- in terms of a striking mandate. fdr did it, richard nixon tried it, george bush in his re-election tried it. are there differences here? anything noteworthy here? i mean, obviously, he's trying to get past a resistant congress to a lot of his proposals, and this styying of a lot of his proposals. are you worried about the way he's doing it? >> well, of course, i'm worried about it. this is why we have three branches of government. any president of any party at any time

. there are a lot of americans out there who own guns who think president obama will want to take them away. >> well, that is true. as we talked about before. we're seeing an incredible swelling not only in the purchasing of guns but in the, in nra membership as well. i think that there is an expected, expectation on the part of the administration that the national rifle association's power is going to be quite, formidable and that they are not going to be able to pass everything in their legislative package, which as you mention is going to be outlined in specifics, soon. it will include, an assault weapons ban. it will include restrictions on magazine clips and high capacity ammunition. that is the kind of thing that will be fought hard by the nra. white house doesn't expect an assault weapons ban to pass but it will include it in its goals because they want to include everything in its goals. i think what they're expecting in the end to find consensus on is more like, i said, consensus and cooperation in the area of background checks and screening, before guns are purchased. maybe the closing of

that as an amen moment or listen to the president or not yesterday and you start talking ant and some lawmakers referred to him as king obama and tyranny, is that fringe or is that a larger portion of the nra's supporters and not just its leadership? >> well, i think it's a little of both. they have a longer ad which is about four minutes and as they sort of lay out the double down on this idea of the president's kids, mentioned david gregory's kids, as well. they have a ticker showing the nra membership going up because of the fight. the nra in this ad, it isn't about truth but propaganda. it is about ginny up support of gun lobby, for buying guns. it's about ginnying up a membership and donors to that organization. and they do that very well. i mean, i think historically, when's happened to the nra is the court controversy and in that way they become more powerful because they're able to swell their membership. >> so in fairness, chris, i won't ask you relating to republicans but to some democrats, joe manchin's comments regarding the president said i'm disappointed the president did not reco

"i" -- an "i" term for barack obama. i hope it will be we've got to solve these problems to go. i'm not talking about we in yes, we can, but congress has to work with the president. the president has to work with congress. so that requires presidential leadership. we didn't see a lot of it in the first term. i am hoping he will reach across the aisle to solve some of the big problems like war on terror, like the challenges of the deficit and the debt, and also to get a budget. we haven't had had a budget in a long time. i hope he will step up to responsibilities to be a president that is inclusive rather than exclusive and focus on the word, we can do it together. >> eric: this morning, on fox sunday, it's common ground and grand themes, but look -- and compromise. his campaign organizing for america they changed that organizing for action. he will be pushing his policies. how does that square with the theme of common ground? >> i think it's a little inconsistent. president should be listening to people who won election during the last cycle. there were a lot of republicans that w
